Political Nursery

The spat between alleged electoral allies PKR and DAP over joint candidatures in five Sarawak constituencies is like two spoilt children fighting over a toy both want.  Of course their parents will take it away so neither will have it. For parents in this case read BN who must be laughing all the way to the polling centres in these places knowing that they have five seats in the bag.

The world has become accustomed to extraordinary events in Malaysia. A Prime Minister who is a mega thief but retains power by force and bribery. State development funds robbed by the same PM and his criminal associates.  A Public Prosecutor (Attorney General) who can “clear” the PM of all criminal liability while holding in his hand documentary proof of the latter’s guilt! A Chief of Police who in addition to protecting against prosecution the PM and other criminals also runs a gun shop! And so on and so on. A litany of crime too long to retail here.

But now there is an equally extraordinary spectacle in the State of Sarawak where state elections are about to be held.   After fifty years during which the ruling party (BN) have held power there and during which the Governor Taib Mahmud and the Chief Minister Adenan Satem have collaborated in the theft from the people of one of the largest tropical forests in the world, the penny was finally beginning to drop with the voters of the State about the crimes committed against them by their BN “leaders”

For the first time since Malaysia was created by a British government running for “anti-colonial” cover, an election will be held after the crimes of BN leaders both in Kuala Lumpur and in Sarawak have become a matter of public knowledge. This represents a golden opportunityfor the defrauded natives of Sarawak to throw out the criminals and begin the process of recovery of the billions stolen from them.

So what do Opposition politicians do? One would expect them to collaborate to secure maximum electoral advantage and to exploit the now public crimes of BN.  Obvious no? But no. They squabble among themselves over which component party should present a joint candidate in each seat and, again like quarreling kids, try to spite each other by both fielding candidates. The votes thus split will let in BN in the five instances already seen and there may well be more to come.

Politics are not a nursery. The naive and the stupid will be gobbled up by the criminal and the ruthless.
